Do you know your assignment?
As my lungs continue to struggle for breathe and my thoughts face the reality of a limited number of days, months and years on this earth I continue to have more focus and more urgency than ever. It is funny how when you look death in the face how simple life gets.
Check out the commands of Jesus. Matthew 22:37-39, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.”
So simple right. Imagine if we took this seriously. How we spend our time would look so different for many of us. We would lean into reading God’s Word as much a possible, in the early morning, in the bathroom, on breaks at work and before bed with the kids. We would even make time by cutting out whatever we could to get time with God. We would look for time like a young man pursuing a woman.
The crazy mystery is that time with God changes everything, literally. You come alive like never before. Trust me. Try it.
And the second command is like it, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Did you catch that? Do we love God more than we love yourselves? Do we love our neighbor as much as ourselves? Just look at our spending. God? Others? Yourself? This is a simple test. It hurts doesn’t it. This rocked me this morning. This lit a fire under me.
Did you know that your neighbor is not just the one who lives next to you. Your neighbors are the people you interact with everyday. Even the people in the cars you pass on your way to work or school. Scary thought huh.
Check out the commission Jesus gave us. Matthew 28:18-20, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” NIV
As we live out the commands this is the natural overflow. This is the assignment every follower of Jesus is given. Did you catch that, every.
I have been pleading with God over the past 6 months, “What is my next assignment?” Oh, Jed. It is so clear. The assignment never changed. The circumstances changed, but not the assignment. It is what I have been taught since childhood. It is what I have taught others since I was 19 years old. It is the mission of the church God assigned me to start 3 1/2 years ago called Mercy Road Church. Love God. Love People. Make Disciples.
I am committing the rest of my life to living out this simple, focused and so fulfilling life and teaching others to do the same. Will you join me? If it was easy everyone would do it. So, do hard things.
If you don’t know where to start I would love to help you. I am starting a ministry called, “Virtual Disciple Maker.com” over the next couple months with my Dad. We will provide online content, coaching and conferences to resource, train and deploy men who desire to be disciple makers in their families, neighborhoods, workplaces and churches. Our home base and first regional ‘Disciple Making Center’ will be in central Wisconsin located at Family Church. Thank you Family Church.
This will be an exciting adventure. Will you join me? This is your assignment too. Jump in.
